“One-Zero, Overhead”

September 25, 2017

The R/T in Air Traffic Control crackled, “Blackjack Tower; One-Zero, Two Minutes“. And there was panic! The SATCO had just enough time to respond “Call Overhead” before he grabbed his telephone and called up the Station Commander. In minutes, the news went round the Station. The AOC Operations Command was descending (literally) on us for an inspection.

This was Air Force Station Adampur in 1957, a remote airfield in the heart of the Punjab, where 27 Sqn was based. There was only one operational Command at that time, covering the whole of India, commanded by the legendary 38 year-old Air Cmde Arjan Singh DFC. Read the rest of this entry »

A Gentleman’s gentleman – Wg Cdr Inder Dass RIP

September 21, 2017

Inder2.jpg

A very sad beginning to a gloomy day. A call at 6.50 from Premjit to inform that Inder had passed away early this morning, 21 Sep 17. Lolly was in Pune on Monday and spoke briefly to Roshan saying she was in a rush and would call back. Later her sister called up to say that Inder had been admitted to the MH in Lucknow and Lolly had flown back. Then the dreaded call this morning. Laid low by an aggressive bacterial infection, was taken into the ICU last afternoon and it was all over by 0115. Read the rest of this entry »

Can I Dare Do This?

September 19, 2017

Ever since Saturday evening I have dreaded this moment. Fortunately an eye disability limited my time on the computer. Finally, conscience dragged me here. After all, I ran a blog. I owed it to myself and my responsibility towards the running of it, to share both our pride in the man and our grief. I can put it off no longer.  Read the rest of this entry »

Sqn Ldr Bhushan Narang – RIP

April 6, 2017

Bhushan 1

That smile will never be forgotten or erased from our memories. It says everything about Bhushan – why he was so loved, admired, generous to a fault, a friend one could totally rely on and above all a devoted husband, father and family person.

He went as he lived, in a flash, and has left behind a heap of memories and anecdotes to remember him by. As I got to the comp and checked the mail, my heart skipped a beat – a mail from Bhushan in the MarutFans Group. As expected it was a joke. A joke that  unfortunately one could not appreciate as his name stayed imprinted on the mind.

Too shell shocked to write anymore.

To Rita, Pritika and Rahul. We feel your grief and are a part of it. Hopefully that thought will give you strength to bear this terrible loss. You are and will always be a part of us.

Rest in peace Bhushan. You brought happiness to many. Now we cherish memories and the thought that you were our friend and always brightened our lives with your presense.

We Met. We Partied. Big Deal.

February 7, 2017

That’s right. We met, we partied, we parted and we had a whale of a time. It would have been even whaler had all our friends joined us. So while we had fun there was always a stray comment – “Pity so and so couldn’t be here”. There is always a next time though and it’s closer than you think. Bossman Bhushan has decreed that we assemble again, within the year, at Bangalore. No ifs – no buts.  Read the rest of this entry »

The Good Die Young: Maj Akshay Girish Kumar – RIP

November 30, 2016

nagrota

Got a message early this morning from Eddie while Koch and I were on the golf course, informing us of the passing away of Akshay, son of Girish and Meghna, in the encounter at Nagrota yesterday – 29 Nov 16.

What can one say at moments like this? That he died a hero? Bravely doing his duty? Mission accomplished? How banal it all sounds. How does that cut through the grief and the loss that Sangeeta, Meghna and Girish are going through right now? No nothing will cut through that.

Please know, however, that this Marut family of yours, through its own tears and grief, is totally there for you right now, sharing your loss, pain and misery and trying to give you strength.

This nation owes you big time.

Truly, only the good die young.
