AVM SK Sonpar – RIP

AVM SK Sonpar ‘Stona’, as he was more popularly referred to, passed away two days ago at Bangalore after a prolonged bout of health problems.

A thorough professional, exceptionally well read, it was almost impossible to contradict him on facts or professional knowledge. A well known figure in the Marut world having been a flight commander and then commanded 31 Sqn for a longish spell, many to-day remember his sharp witted comments and no-nonsense approach to his work.

He had settled down in Bangalore after retirement, and during the last few years generally preferred to keep his own company.

To Mrs Sonpar, Deepak, Arun and his family our heartfelt condolences.

    Saddening news indeed.

No eulogy would seem too grand for this great man! As young officers and raw Marut pilots, in so many ways as it were, we cut our teeth in Service under his awe inspiring command and tutelage in 31 Squadron. He was a man for all seasons and a true example of professionalism and propriety. An affectionate and private person, everyone in the Squadron below flight commander was ‘SON’ to him. His straight forwardness was as infectious as it was exemplary in its display.

I feel privileged to have known and worked under a person like Stona Sir. Rest in peace. Surely your Sqn will gather under you once again in the next world. Some could already be there while the rest would inevitably follow in due course.

May the Good Lord give his near and dear the strength to bear his immense loss.

    In grief,

    Ravi Burli

    Shocking news, sir

May his soul rest in peace

May God give strength to the bereaved family at this critical juncture.

We Marut people stand with them!

    Miss you Sonpar sir.
